Gallery of the Stupid

 <modified>2008-06-16T19:54:20Z</modified>
<tagline>Welcome to the Gallery of the Stupid. In many galleries you will see great examples of the arts, architecture, or maybe even history. You will not see them here. No sir, this gallery is dedicated to presenting stupidity at its finest, or lowest depending on how you view stupidity. We view it as something to poke fun at and hopefully get a chuckle out of you along the way.

I think that old axiom, "it takes one to know one" is very appropriate. I think it takes the fine eyes of a true knucklehead to find the silly parts of life and Wally is working overtime to help you see the humor in everyday things.

We would like to think that maybe some company might see themselves pictured here and take the opportunity to laugh at themselves, see the silliness and maybe even change. So far the only thing that has happened is that several not so small companies have threatened to sue me for the content on this site. We hope that you the reader have a better sense of humor than corporate America.</tagline>

I recently visited Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA where I found these Code of Conduct signs posted all over the park.

Some of these rules seem counter-intuitive to the mission of the park. For instance, no bathing suits. It's a water park. Were you expecting me to wear a tuxedo? Next, we have the no profanity rule. After being gouged for $15.00 for parking, $40.00 for a ticket, someone might have a little slip of the tongue when they pay $11.00 for a beer.

But the biggest reason the Code of Conduct sign ended up in the Gallery of the Stupid is the inability to proof read. Take a look at the No Profanity rule. The Park does not allow "profanity or offensive behaior" Perhaps they mean behavior?

That simple spelling error, which should have been caught in Photoshop long before they had the signs professionally printed, is not the egregious error. To me the biggest single reason I am including this in the Gallery of the Stupid has to do with the bathing suit rule. If you look closely at the peeling sticker, you can tell that the sign was already corrected at least once by someone who took the time to fix a misspelling with the bathing suit rule, but still overlooked the misspelling in the profanity rule.

You can't blame it on someone being drunk, because nobody could afford to get drunk at those beer prices while being paid minimum wage.

Another thing that frightens me at Discovery Kingdom is the fact that all of the rides are run by teenagers. The thought that my safety is being managed by kids who could not get a better job than working at an amusement park for minimum wage is a rather frightening thought in itself.

I found this ad on Forbes.com for top 10 electronic devices of the year. The Apple iPod was the number one device, which was no surprise there.

What I found surprising is how Microsoft completely drowns out the iPod with Windows logos in every single ad.

What I do not understand is why doesn't Microsoft use the space to promote it's upcoming music player, Zune? It's pushing some other Microsoft technology instead. If you're going to blow ad dollars, do it with something to sell a product, not just bury the message in your own logos.

But as you get closer, you notice that it doesn't actually accept deposits. It quit taking them on February 16, 2006.

The stupid thing is that both signs are new. Why didn't the person who added the red sign remove the "now accepting deposits" sign?

The best stupid thing has to be the fact that the sign clearly states that you can make a deposit at the night drop. But there is no night drop at this location. There's not a bank in sight. In fact, this machine is located under a bar.

I'm not so sure what a cock-fight has to do with yummy Mexican food, other than perhaps you get an idea of where the chicken for the enchilada came from. But that is their chosen logo. An animal act labeled as cruel and banned in the State of Washington. This may not be the best way to get the people that love animals to come down for happy hour, but that's the logo, sitting above the door, greeting people coming into the restaurant as it has for many years.

Lets say you are an Indian Tribe and you have a nice parcel of property on the water. What should you put on the property? Well how about allow a giant gasoline pipeline supplied by a nearby refinery?

Now that you have the pipeline cutting across the property, what else would you do with it?

How about build a casino?

OK, since you are an Indian Tribe in a state with some moderately restrictive laws regarding fireworks, and you have the ability to sell fireworks, why not sell fireworks? It sounds like a good idea. So where would you locate these firework stands? Well that Casino sure attracts a lot of people. So naturally you put the firework stands, NEXT TO THE PIPELINE.

So you are an Indian tribal member, you're selling fireworks and making a bundle. But there is also a matter of what to do with the kids. Most kids love fireworks and they should. Of course, once your parents have a stand full of fireworks, the curious tyke will want to experiment and see how they work by shooting some off. What better place to shoot off fireworks than a nice, stable platform, LIKE A GIANT GASOLINE PIPELINE.

This house is located in Seattle and I swear it has on its four walls, 17 different types of siding.

We have asbestos shingle, metal siding, stained wooden shingles, untreated different style wood shingles, untreated wood siding, different untreated shingles than are found in the front, bare wood wall, tar paper over bare wood wall, painted wood siding (different than the unpainted), bare concrete, some I haven't mentioned and no idea what direction the homeowner is actually planning. It is as if the major plan was to side the house using free samples available at a home improvement store.

I have been following this house as a passive observer for years and here is what I know. It has had the same owner since this project started, they have made no progress in years, they have no sense of color, no sense of whimsey and if the yard is any clue, no statement on siding, since the yard kind of looks like it's been as neglected as the siding.

All in all, it's one of my favorite houses to show to people. You can roll up to this house, point it out to a visitor and ask, "what do you think they were thinking?"

That's always worth a long discussion that always features the sentence, "well I'm glad I am not their neighbor."

This damn sign bugs me for so many reasons I go into fits.

First off, lets look at the typeface.
The state used a variant of Comic Sans to give the illusion a child somehow created the sign. If this actually fooled one single driver, they should immediately have their license suspended because they are too stupid to be driving.

Now lets look at the emotion this creates.
I am so insulted by this sign, I almost feel like running down a construction worker. This might be why the sign is located nowhere near an actual construction site. I'm thinking the foreman on this site looked at the sign and decided to mount it a mile down the road to save the lives of his crew.

I'm not opposed to irreverent signs. In fact I encourage them. I'd even go so far as to use a kid for the ad. How about a sign with a photo of a construction worker and some text like this:

THIS IS MY DAD
IF YOU RUN HIM DOWN
NOBODY WILL PAY MOMMY CHILD SUPPORT

At least this way if you see a construction guy along the side of the road, you'll know who he is. And if he wanders into traffic, you'll know why.

People dearly love coffee in Seattle, so it comes as no suprise that nearly every Washington State Ferry has a coin operated coffee machine. The surprise is what they dispense!

All of the coffee dispensers on the Washington State Ferries have a little window shows what is supposed to be the coffee beans before they are ground into your coffee. That's the visual connection I think they were going for when they thought up the idea. It turns out to be a very bad mistake.

On the right we see coffee beans and they look fairly decent. But on the left side we have this non-descript crap. I don't know about you, but when I order a hot chocolate I do not want to have it made out of something that looks like ground up dirty tiles of linoleum, which might explain quite a bit the taste of the hot chocolate coming out of the machines.

Another peculiar thing is that the temperature for the liquid is set so high that I am only slightly shocked the liquid doesn't come out in the form of a jet of steam instead of sugar, linoleum and water.

There is something very wrong with the sign. Very wrong. This is proof once again that you can get away with murder if you make signs for the Washington State Ferry Fleet.

Take a close look at the sign on the right. You can find this sign proudly displayed on the M/V Tacoma, M/V Puyallup, and the M/V Wenatchee. It may be on other boats as well. The same sign can be found at the Woodlawn Park Zoo, so it might be a common Washington State sign.

At first glance it seems perfectly normal sign to indicate this is a bathroom, or in ship lingo, a head for men. You have the international symbol for Man, which indicates this is a mens bathroom. The Wheelchair is an international symbol to indicate the Mens room is handicap accessible and then you have a sign indicating a baby changing table. They even go so far as to put the braille for "Men" on the sign as well.

Lets take another look at that sign. Specifically, the baby changing table part.

molesting station?

The way the person is standing and leaning over the baby indicates only one thing, this is a pediphile station.

That is simply not a natural pose for changing diapers! You really do not want to get in front of the business end on one of those human drool dispensers because they can and will aim and fire!

Any smart parent will be standing to the side where you can unfasten the diaper, roll the kid, place a new diaper down, wipe up any mess, snap them in place and hope to heck you can find a nice dumpster to dump the guacamole.

I stumbled across this merry bag of salty goodness on my last trip to Canada. Ketchup flavored chips was enough for me to start laughing my ass off, but when I ran across the "Simulated" part, I was laughing so hard I was horizontal.

You know, I like ketchup as much as the next guy and in fact I like it a bit more than the next guy. Maybe it's due to the fact that I live in the golden red kingdom of Ketchup where there is always plenty of Norwegian Hot Sauce and the rest of the world hoardes small caches of ketchup packets to use in financial transactions, because I cannot fathom a reason why you would have to use "SIMULATED" ketchup to flavor potato chips. The reason escapes me.

I checked the list of ingredients for ketchup and it contains water, salt, vinegar, tomatoes and some other junk. There was no ingredients like "partially hydrogenated gold" or anything of excessive value, so I cannot understand why Old Dutch would have to skimp on the ketchup.

Old Dutch is a trademarked and registered name that might even have some sacred religious meaning for Old Dutch Foods, LTD. Winnepeg, MB, R2X 2Y5 and is used here without permission. Honest, I liked the taste of the product, we just thought it was freakier than opening a crate full of horny monkeys infected with Ebola and remembering that I just covered myself in monkey rut.

There is absolutely no connection between Old Dutch and Wally Glenn or Planet Wally and no association should be assumed, inferred or in any way suggested. In fact, if you're like me and a big fan of ketchup, A.K.A. Norwegian Hot Sauce, I suggest you pick up a bag and try them. They really do taste like ketchup.

Can I Have Some Slim Fast to Wash Down This Ice Cream?

Some sadistic person at the QFC market on Broadway in Seattle thought the perfect place to put all of the diet products would be right over the ice cream section. The last thing you need when you are trying to drop a few pounds by swilling Slim Fast diet shakes is to be glancing right at the Breyers Strawberry, Chocolate and Vanilla combination.

You know, call me a cynic, but my gut reaction here says that it was the smart folks at Breyers Ice Cream that suggested the product placement. Nothing else really makes sense. Nobody goes to the ice cream section, sees the diet products and thinks, "hey, hold the phone here. I could have this tasteless. diet product over ice cream? Wow! It's only slightly more expensive too!"

Not in my family.

I was checking out the various farm type critters at the Puyallup Fair or should I say, the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup, WA, when I came across this odd little dumpster. Personally I couldn't believe it. Have we really come to this? Have we really become so overly politically correct that we are afraid that the subject of animal waste just might offend someone?

Now I can understand why you wouldn't have a sign that read "COW SHIT ONLY." Not only would it be needlessly crude, but there were also duckies and chickies, horsies and goatses standing around doing what eventually must happen when you feed them, so it would not be grammatically correct, and obviously that has become important on dumpsters these days.

Come on, "DOO DOO ONLY"? would "ANIMAL WASTE ONLY" or "MANURE ONLY" be too damn offensive? What are the chances you would catch heck for using "MANURE ONLY" as a sign to indicate this waste bin is for the disposal of animal feces? Think about this, most of the people who were in and around the animal exhibits were in the business of animals. Some were breeders, some were farmers, some like myself were consumers.

Why the people of DM Disposal (shouldn't that be B.M. Disposal?) would be so worried they might offend someone is beyond me. In general, the target audience of the animal exhibits knows that when you put food in one end, manure comes out the other and they are not usually offended by the word or the substance. Since this target audience is the one that would typically employ DM's services, I would think they might grasp the fact that even the most religious and uptight people in the community would not call animal poo "doo doo." I would guess even the most uptight Quaker farmer at the fair would call the stuff that falls out of the butts of their cows manure. In fact, if I knew an uptight Quaker farmer I would ask them what they call animal poop, but really, Quaker farmers and I tend not to hang out in the same social circles. It's just one of those quirks that happen in social groups.

This sign is located just south of Tacoma Washington on Interstate 5. My first reaction to seeing this sign was, "Fort Lewis or No Fort Lewis? Well, which is it then?"

All of my friends get a big kick out of this sign. We all comment about it in conversation and certainly when we drive by it. It is one of our favorite roadway signs. I am not really sure what the answer to the question is, but it seems funny that a freeway exit that leads to a rather large US Army base would give you the choice of whether or not you wanted to go there. Sometimes Army logic escapes me, which is why we have oxymorons such as Army Intelligence.
